This biography follows the life of Coco Chanel, who is possibly the most iconic fashion designer in history. Hers is a rags to riches story, from her childhood in an orphanage, to becoming “one of the most influential women in history“ (HarperCollins). She remains a self-made enigma. After spending a decade in research, Justine Picardie has created a ‘vividly told account, in the style of Chanel herself' (The Daily Mail). It is a Sunday Times bestselling biography and was shortlisted for the Galaxy National Book Awards. The Chanel brand has been rejuvenated to its former glory, by the multi-talented designer, Karl Lagerfeld.

Hi Maha,
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure where to leave a comment so I have chosen your first blog on Chanel.
I've had a look around your blog and it looks really good. Your annotations are very focused and follow the style we practised in class. They give us author details and lots of teasers to get the reader interested. Well done.
I don't know if you have made an introduction page yet. I have been clicking on the introduction page and references in the navigation bar but haven't been able to access them. That ma be a result of not being an author, but I'm not sure. Make sure you don't forget to include the introduction page which states you aim, potential audience and overview of the topic.
Your layout is nice and easy to navigate. The youtube clips are a nice touch. I think your choice of topic was really well timed as there seems to be a good selection of movies based on the fashion industry out there at the moment.
One thing Louise mentioned to me was adding a counter as a widget. This seems to be pretty standard. Also, if I didn't see it then don't worry, but I couldn't find a link to your library. I linked mine using a "favicon" on my layout template. I took a screen shot of the library logo and then linked the url to it. You could also add some links in a gadget for fashion labels or online magazines if vogue has one for example. This could give your site a little more novelty for the readers.
I thought your presentation on the 29th was good. You used a prezi which I still haven't worked out how to use. You explained which books you had chosen and why. This was good. You also gave a reading which I found interesting and of all the books presented here I'd like to read that particular one because of it's Australian content.
I just a silly idea as an optional presentation activity. When I used to teach clothing descriptions to my esl classes in my past life, I used to get some catwalk music and get the students to walk the runway with the rest of the class describing what they were wearing. They always got into it and it was one of the most enjoyable lessons I used to do. I think it would have been fun to make John walk the catwalk to some music and have us all describe his fashion sense.
Anyway, well done on the blog and presentation.
Take a look at my blog if you have a minute. Any feedback is appreciated.
Hi Maha,
ReplyDeleteI thought your presentation was good and it was interesting, considering that I don't really know much about the fashion industry. Your blog is easy to navigate and I like the background that you chose and I think it suits and goes well with your blog.
I also liked the fact that you used Prezi whereas the rest of us used PowerPoint. The YouTube clips are a great addition to the blog and it was good that you explained the books that you chose and for what reason(s).
Well done on the blog and presentation, oh and I have sent you an invite to view my blog and any feedback would be much appreciated.
What a beautifully seductive experience you have created - especially for this sadly functional clothes horse, who while really liking nice clothes but can seldom afford them (except in a DJ’s ‘end of sale’ sale) – has had until this moment zero interest in the background stories of the fashion world and its creators. Not from a significantly snobbish attitude, (though I am sure that also played its part in my mindset); but more from an assumption that there was little of particular interest in this world for me… well, you have certainly changed all that! And I will most definitely now be on the lookout for that Coco Chanel biog.
ReplyDeleteI also like the professional way you have tied the blog into the library experience, creating a gateway for library patrons to step through into another world (which I personally think is a more magical transition than that provided by much so called fantasy literature!). And as I said at the time of your presentation, there is an uplifting after effect from this blog that compels one to want to make the local library a more stylish place, if only in small ways… now there’s an idea… a dress code for the library!
I think a promotion like this easily lends itself to including an exhibition of clothing and accessories in the library space as well as a ‘first night’ event with lots of music and fun and dressing up – and including design elements like a fashion show that involves local designers and retail businesses. Good for business and good for the community!
Well done Maha! Cheers JB
